Secured through a competitive tendering exercise, GS Kelsey Construction was appointed to deliver a series of classroom extensions at St Bernadette’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, enhancing capacity within this popular and historic school.
The project involved the demolition of redundant existing facilities to make way for a purpose-built extension comprising three new Key Stage 2 classrooms, a dedicated Special Educational Needs nurture room, associated store rooms, and new WC facilities. The development was carefully designed using traditional masonry construction to reflect and complement the architectural character of the original school building, ensuring the new additions blended seamlessly with their surroundings.
Internally, the building was fully fitted out to provide bright, modern and adaptable teaching spaces, complete with integrated mechanical and electrical services to support a comfortable and efficient learning environment. Every detail was considered to create facilities that are both practical for staff and inspiring for pupils.
Delivering the works within a live school environment presented particular logistical and safety challenges. The site was located within the heart of the operational campus, requiring meticulous planning around material deliveries, contractor access, and pupil movement throughout the day. Through close collaboration with the school leadership team and careful programme coordination, these complexities were efficiently managed.
The project was handed over safely, on time, and to the complete satisfaction of the academy—providing high-quality new teaching facilities that will support the school community for years to come.
