In the summer of 2020, GS Kelsey were appointed through North Lincolnshire Council’s Building Framework to design, construct and manage two significant extensions at Baysgarth Academy. The commission followed the successful delivery of a new Skills Centre the previous year, and we were delighted to return to the school to further enhance its growing campus.

The project introduced two substantial additions to the school’s facilities: a 200m² purpose-built dance studio and a 250m² dining room extension.

The new dance studio was constructed using traditional building methods to complement the surrounding architecture and maintain continuity across the site. Internally, the facility was finished to a high specification, including the installation of a professional sprung floor system and full-height mirrors, creating a high-performance space designed to inspire students and support both curriculum and extracurricular activities.

The dining room extension was delivered using a steel frame construction with a contemporary Trespa-clad façade, providing a modern contrast within the campus environment. During the build, unforeseen supply and design challenges required a significant on-site adjustment to the original proposal. Through proactive problem-solving and close collaboration with the client and design team, our team implemented a major change without impacting the overall programme—ensuring continuity and timely delivery.

In addition to the extensions, first-floor classrooms within the existing building were refurbished and reconfigured to create a brand-new science laboratory. The upgraded facility included fitted laboratory furniture, integrated services, and new Bunsen burner installations, providing students with a modern and fully equipped learning environment.

The successful completion of the project further strengthened our relationship with the school, leading to our appointment in 2021 to deliver a £2 million new Art Block—an endorsement of the trust, quality, and reliability demonstrated throughout this scheme.

This project reflects GS Kelsey’s commitment to delivering adaptable, future-focused educational spaces that enrich learning environments while overcoming complex delivery challenges.
